Is Martial Arts The Same As Jiu-Jitsu?

Curious about martial arts and Jiu-Jitsu? Not many people know the difference between the two though. It is always a good idea to know what you are getting into and which option is best for you. While these two are similar they are not the same and aren’t always both for everyone.

Benefits of Taking Martial Arts

When you train to perform each technique, you’ll quickly gain the confidence of knowing that you can master this useful skill. You will work on each move until you have mastered it. This type of class ensures you will stay active, as it is sure to have a high amount of physical activity.

You can even practice these moves at home to enhance your athleticism. This can give you improvement in other areas of your physical activity outside of classes. Practicing outside of class is always important. Practice makes progress, progress is very important.

Martial Arts vs Jiu-Jitsu

There are generally two different types of Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian and Japanese. They can both be used in close combat for self-defense though. However, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is very different from other martial arts. The main focus is grappling and ground fighting.

You will also learn to focus on strategy and technique in both activities. Martial arts is a way of training yourself to physically fend off an attacker. In all honesty, when it comes to martial arts vs. Jiu-Jitsu, you can’t go wrong with either one. There is so much to learn in both classes.

Skills You Will Take Away

With anything you do in life, you can take something good away from it and use it in your everyday life. The same goes for martial arts or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. You won’t just be learning to kick and punch. BJJ will benefit you in a few different areas of your life.

Discipline

You must be very disciplined when it comes to martial arts and Jiu-Jitsu. Anyone taking these classes must learn discipline. Can you imagine having that roll over into your everyday life as well? The team at Performance Jiu-Jitsu knows this to be true.

Goals

It is a great idea to have many goals in life. Whether they are personal, business, fitness, etc. Goals give you something to strive for daily. Without goals, you might not remember what you are working towards or have a reason to work towards it. With BJJ, goals can come in the form of mastering specific moves, or even attending every class for a certain amount of time.

Focus

Sometimes it can be hard to focus, especially if you’re fighting off an attacker. You will have to really work on your focus in learning each and every move. This is going to help you focus in so many other areas of your life as well.

I tried a few classes at another bjj school in NJ, but after one class here I knew it was the one for me. The instructors are great and so is the usual crowd. Everyone is friendly, patient, and understanding. It felt like I found a new little community. On top of that I come out of every class feeing like I learned something new. Truly a great place with the best people. 10/10 would recommend.

I have been training at Performance Jiu-Jitsu for many years and it has been an exceptional experience. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed by both the instructors and fellow students. The environment is friendly catering to practitioners of all levels—from beginners to advanced competitors.
The instructors are highly skilled and possess a deep understanding of Jiu-Jitsu. They are patient, approachable, and excellent at breaking down complex techniques into manageable steps. Each class is structured to maximize learning, and they ensure that every student gets personalized attention.
The curriculum is well-rounded and comprehensive. It covers a wide range of techniques, from basic fundamentals to advanced submissions and transitions. The school also offers specialized classes, such as self-defense and no-gi training, which enhance the overall learning experience.

Have been there three months so far. The head instructor Lou is extremely professional and welcoming. The atmosphere is very supportive, members all strive to help each other learn and grow as Jiu Jitsu martial artists. I originally joined to get into shape and lose some weight. In doing so, I have found BJJ to be both physically AND mentally interesting, fortifying, strengthening, as it tests your capacity to learn and grow in multiple dimensions. Would recommend to anyone.
