The Biggest Mistakes Beginners Make with Advanced Jiu-Jitsu Moves

Learning advanced moves in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is exciting, but can be a trap for beginners. Many new students try flashy submissions and complex guards before they’re ready. This often leads to frustration, injuries, and slow progress.

Here are the biggest mistakes beginners make with advanced techniques and how to avoid them.

Skipping The Basics

Every advanced move in BJJ starts with solid basics. Without a strong foundation, nothing works. Beginners often rush ahead, trying fancy moves before mastering simple ones like shrimping or closed guard control. Focus on posture, grips, and balance, making advanced techniques possible.

Moving Too Fast

Advanced techniques often involve speed, but beginners think speed should come before control. Moving too quickly leads to sloppy mistakes and lost positions. Slow down and focus on controlling the position first. Once you have control, speed will come naturally and improve your game.

Poor Timing And Awareness

Timing is everything in jiu-jitsu, but beginners often miss the right moment. They might try a sweep when their opponent is balanced or go for submission without breaking posture first. Advanced moves rely on knowing when your opponent is vulnerable. You build that feel through mat time and focused drilling.

Ignoring Defense

Many beginners focus too much on offense. They chase submissions and sweeps but ignore escapes and defense. Without a strong defense, you’ll panic when you lose position and rush your attacks. Work on staying calm in bad spots—good defense gives you the confidence to attack smarter.

Copying Moves Without Understanding

Watching YouTube can be helpful, but many beginners only copy what they see. They often miss important details like hand placement, balance, and leverage. Instead of only copying, ask questions and get feedback from your coach. Understanding the move is what makes it work.

Trying Techniques On Everyone

Advanced moves don’t work on everyone. Some techniques are more effective on specific body types or reactions. It’s essential to read your training partner and adjust your game accordingly. This is how advanced moves truly become effective and work in live rolls.

Not Drilling Enough

Beginners get bored with drilling. They want to roll, not repeat techniques over and over, but drilling builds muscle memory. Without it, advanced moves fail under pressure. Make drilling a habit, and practice the same move until it feels automatic.

Final Thoughts

Advanced jiu-jitsu moves are exciting, but it takes patience and time to master them. Don’t rush the process—focus on building strong fundamentals first. Work on control, timing, and awareness. Once you’ve got those down, advanced techniques will start to work effectively and feel natural.

Have been there three months so far. The head instructor Lou is extremely professional and welcoming. The atmosphere is very supportive, members all strive to help each other learn and grow as Jiu Jitsu martial artists. I originally joined to get into shape and lose some weight. In doing so, I have found BJJ to be both physically AND mentally interesting, fortifying, strengthening, as it tests your capacity to learn and grow in multiple dimensions. Would recommend to anyone.
